We have had our first blocking rehearsal and got about
halfway through the show! I am very happy with how everything is turning out.
Everyone seems so excited to be working on the show, so it is making me very
excited to get more things blocked.
Something that I really like to do in the first couple
rehearsals, is allow the actors to move through the show in the way that they feel
most comfortable. I have the actors run through a scene with only a little
character direction. I really like to
think of ideas when they are moving through the space, so I can visualize if it
going to work or not. After they have ran through it, I put my ideas to the
test while incorporating the way that they saw the character. It gives the
rehearsal process a collaborative feel and the actors can feel like they have a
voice in the creation process.
I am already loving the relationship that I see between Sadie
and Ben. Sadie is the youngest of the siblings and Ben is her father. In the
scene where they are pranking Ariana, the mom, the actors shared a high-five
during it. I had given them no direction too, but I loved it. It showed a
playful relationship between a dad and daughter. All the actors who play the
siblings are starting to find how they interest with each other. Sadie and Lily
are much more likely to fight, and I have seen that tension build up in my
actors. It is such a rewarding feeling to see that, especially in the first
rehearsal. Everyone that I cast are starting to understand their roles and how
they interact with each other. It is amazing to see those relationships
bloom.
We have our next blocking rehearsal on Sunday where we will
be finishing up the show! I am a little nervous about the ending. I can’t decide
where I want my Sasquatch to enter until I see my actors on stage. I have a lot
of ideas to try out!
