This has been a rough week. One of the actors had a family emergency so he hasn’t been able to rehearse with the cast. While this is absolutely understandable, it also slowed down our pace a little bit. To make up to it, I scheduled another rehearsal to work with him. Besides working on blocking, we also worked on his monologues. I was glad that he was very bold the whole time to play with the lines and made strong choices. My original plan was to have him fall on the floor by the end of the rehearsal but we ended up deciding to discard it because he is able to give me what I wanted without the physical comedic effect. Plus, I would really rather not risk him getting injured!
On another note, Jack, who plays officer John, was called into the rehearsal for the first time last Sunday. I’ve never worked with him before but he brought great energy to the play at the audition. At his first rehearsal, he expected detail blocking instructions, which I’m fine with. However, I do still want to encourage him to make some bold choices and play with it in our next rehearsal.
On Monday, we had a monologue session with Sarah, who plays Linda. She’s relatively new to the theatre so we mostly worked on projection and movement to make sure she is comfortable talking out loud and not self-conscious.
Our next rehearsal is also the off-book day so I’m excited to see how everyone does!
